OBITUARIES From previous page Paul Purdue high school sweet- Paul Purdue, husband, dad grandpa, passed away October 2002 with his family at his side due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was born March 25, 1921 in Salt Lake City to Eva Higbee and Paul Purdue. He graduated from West High School and attended the of U. He married his high school heart. Louise Baldwin in 1941.

He served in Worid War in the 8th Air Force. He was a member of the LDS Church. Dad's first love was his family. His zest for life was contagious. His wit and practical jokes were endless.

He loved the outdoors, especially skiing, gold and fishing. Survived by his wife of 61 years, daughters Sharon Orton (Kent), Barbara Bisping (Ted), Janet Call (Clint), eight grandchildren, one greatgrandchild and sister Mary Jane Salmon. He bravely fought a battle with multiple myeloma, and later with incredible strength and courage succumbed to leukemia. He was no doubt welcomed back to the waiting arms of his loving parents: Niels Kimball and Dorcus Beata Thomson to whom he was born on June 20, 1927. We are sure the glorious reunion that is now taking place includes his beloved dog Ginger. We are sure they have already taken a long walk together. Paul was a good and loyal son who had so much pride for his parents and heritage.

He had a soft spot for the town of Riverton, where he was born. He along with four brothers, proudly served our great country in World War il, and the Korean War. He was an all-state athlete, who with great pride and spirit, helped lead the Jordan Beetdiggers to state championships in football and basketball. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1945, and it is there that he met his eternal sweetheart, LuRene Mackey. On Sept.

17, 1948 they were married for Time and all Eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Last month while Paul was in the hospital, they celebrated their marriage and incredible legacy of 54 years. Paul graduated from BYU with a BA in animal husbandry and went on to obtain a teaching certificate and Masters degree from the of U. Although he attended both colleges, he was a Cougar at heart and an avid supporter of BYU athletics. He followed in his father's footsteps as an educator.

His teaching career spanned 33 years with 25 years at Hillcrest High. He was also a skilled and meticulous carpenter. Paul was a deeply devoted and ever faithful husband. He and LuRene brought five children into the world. He was a loving and incredibly dedicated father.

He was a proud grandpa to 17 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. He might possibly be the "Most Loved Grandpa He set a wonderful example to his grandchiidren by his continuous concern and devotion to them. His example and undying love will live on in their hearts forever. Paul had many great friends. They thad an incredible bond of friendship that spanned many years.

They were faithful at getting together and keeping the bonds close. He held his best friend, Fred Densley, particularly close to his heart. They have been best friends since the 5th grade. Paul conducted his life with great integrity and dignity as he constantly heid steadfast and true to his beliefs and convictions. He was a faithful servant of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He served in many ward and stake leadership positions. Paul is survived by his wife; five children, Shauna (Todd) Carlson, Morgan; Bryan (Lori) Thomson, South Jordan; Jeff (Michelle) Thomson, Sandy; Julie Umphrey, Sandy; Jana Wagner, West Jordan; 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister, Marilyn (Burt) Johnson, Mt. Grace was born February 21, 1912 in Driggs, Idaho to Walter Henry and Almira Teresa Porter Durrant. She was married on Jan. 22, 1945 to Daniel David Lehman. Grace Lehman. 90, of Salt passed away peace- was a graduate of LDS Hospital College of Nursing.

She worked as an R.N. in Salt Lake, Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served with her husband and children on a church building mission in Coburg, Germany from 1962 to 1965. Survivors include her children, Lynda (John) Frome, Joseph D. (Marlene) Lehman; grandchildren, Clint, Candice, Cory, Casey Frome; Jennifer, Cinthia Carrie, David, Michelle, Michael Lehman; she was expecting her first grandchild in four weeks.

Alicia Susan Garte Yates Alicia Susan Garteiz- Yates was born August 21, 1977 and passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at home with her family after suffering from congenital heart failure. Our little angel sent to us from God has returned back to be with God. She lived life to its fullest. She very special little girl who had a special way of touching everyone's heart she met. Winnifred Olivia "Winnie" Nelson CEDAR CITY, UT-Winnie Nelson, one of Cedar City's oldest citizens, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2002 in her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Beaver, Utah on March 16, 1905 to Willard and Jean Frazer Hales. She was the youngest of four girls. Her sisters, Elsie Hales, and Ruby Hales MacMullin have all preceded her in death. Winnie married her sweetheart, Bill Nelson, in Beaver, Utah on May 11, 1926.

They made their home in Beaver until 1940, when they moved to Cedar City. Bill preceded Winnie in death on July 10, 1981. Bill and Winnie were the parents of three children, Beverly (Keith) Joseph of Salt Lake City, Utah; Virginia (Bob) Pinder of Park City, Utah; and Jim Nelson of Cedar City. They were the grandparents of 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Winnie was in the first graduating class at Beaver High School, after the old Murdock Academy closed down.

She attended the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City for a year and then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad for two years prior to her marriage. She was one of the first five licensed beauty operators in the State of Utah, and owned and operated a beauty shop in Beaver during the Great Depression. She often bartered food and other commodities for permanents and haircuts as money was so scarce during those times. Winnie and Bill loved prospecting for gold in the early part of their marriage, and shared some exciting adventures in the hills of Beaver County. Winnie was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities.

She was a teacher and leader in the Scouting and Young Women's Organizations in the Church. She also served as PTA President at the Cedar City East Elementary School. Winnie loved the springtime when everything started to come alive and green up after the long outside Utah winters. She enjoyed working in her yard and always had a beautiful lot of flowers and fruit trees. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with her many friends in Cedar City and remained active in two Bridge Clubs until last year.

The girls in her card affectionately club used to refer to her as "Winnin' The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Home Health Care and Hospice providers that showed so much empathy and kindness in the care they provided our mother during the last few months. We would also like to express our thanks to her who was with her 24 hours a day for special granddaughter, Linda Young, these last two weeks of her life. Ruth Thelma Hunter Cooke Ruth Thelma Hunter Cooke died in dignity Oct. 9, 2002 at the University of Utah Hospital. truly graceful lady, she was born October 12, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Leander Scott (Tod) Hunter and Ruth Goudie Hunter. Ruth was their only child. She graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah.

She worked as a commercial artist for the four major department stores at that time in Salt Lake City: The Paris, Auerbach's, Makoff's, and ZCMI. The last seven years of her career were spent as Art Director at the ZCMI advertising department. Ruth married Joseph Fred Cooke of Younstown, Ohio, Sept. 17, 1943 in Salt Lake. He died June 11, 1992.

She is survived by four children: Christina (David) Tyler, Nicoiette (Randy) Traver, Jeffrey (Marty) Cooke, Bradley (Valerie) Cooke, all of Salt Lake City; and ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ruth was very fond of animals and had many pets throughout her life. She loved classical music, the ballet, and graphic arts of all kinds, but most of all she loved her family; one of her favorite maxims was, "Blood is thicker than water!" Marvin Jay Baxter CENTERFIELD, UTAH Marvin Jay Baxter, 72, of Centerfield, Utah, passed away October 9, 2002, at his home in Centerfield. He was born August 20, 1930, in Gunnison, Utah, to Lowell and Nina Jensen Baxter.

He married. Darlene Hill, April 9 in Ely Nevada. Marvin was a veteran of the Korean War where he received the Purple Heart and many other medals and citations. He worked as a mechanic and a manager for Ensign making browning hunting knives. He also worked for the South Sanpete, School District in Gunnison until he retired.

Marv was a person that could do anything. He loved hunting, fishing and being in the Mountains with his family. But his pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Centerfield; children Lee (Julie) Centerfield; Dennah (Richie); Paul, both of Salt Lake City; Marlene (Stephen), Centerfield; Dennis (Carolyn) Redmond; Rusty of Salt Lake City; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by parents; three sisters, five brothers, and one granddaughter.

Mullins BRIGHAM CITY- James B. Mullins, born in Scofield. Utah, passed away October 8, 2002, in Brigham City, Utah, at the age of 80. He was the son of Frank Mullins and Mary Ann Davis Mullins. He attended Carbon High School, where he played various sports, and later graduated from the University of Utah.

He was employed in procurement at Thiokol for almost 28 years and retired in 1987 at the age of 67. Jim was an avid golfer and loved to play in tournaments. His favorite golf course was Eagle Mountain where he made three hole in ones. He respected the integrity of the game and lived his life in much the same manner, with honesty, integrity and a sense of fair play. He truly loved his family and friends and was adored by his grandchildren.

Jim married Donna Lue Nielsen Mullins in Price, Utah, on July 18, 1952, who predeceased him. They were married for 47 years and enjoyed traveling. They would spend each winter in Hawaii with their daughter's family who lived on Kauai. They were so well known and liked by the locals that they, were considered to be one of them, "Kama' aina' He was also predeceased by his brother Marvin Mullins and his sister Mary Mullins Wahl. He is survived by his sister Betty Mullins Rose of Plano, Texas, and his brother Robert Mullins of Las Vegas, Nevada.

He is survived by a son Bob Mullins of Centerville, Utah, two daughters, Michelle Mullins Cuatto of Kauai, Hawaii, and Tamera Mullins Jensen of Mendon, Utah, and eight grandchildren and his special friend DeAnne Ebeling. To his family he was a mentor, to his friends he was an inspiration. He will be dearly missed. Funeral a.in. services will be held at 11:00 Monday, October 14, at Myers Mortuary.

Born September 27, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Gustav and Johanna Vinke Walkenhorst. Married Belva Bateman, September 6, 1940 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served in the Swiss German Mission from 1936-1939. He served in World War Il in Europe from June 1943 to December 1945. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and served as a Counselor in the Bishopric, Counselor in the Stake High Priest presidency, Ward High Priest Group Leader, Scout Master, Priest Advisor, Host on Temple Square, and was a dedicated Home Teacher.

He was a co-owner of the Ice Cream Mix Company. Operated three Dahnken stores in Northern California until retirement. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and working in his garden. He loved his family and was proud of their many accomplishments. Author Unknown Brendan Clayne Thompson Brendan Clayne Thompson returned home to his loving Father in Heaven on Thursday, October 10, after courageously fighting Neuroblastoma for two and one-half years. Brendan was born on December 20; 1996, the oidest of three children to Kyle and Kathryn Thompson.

He was a bright, tenderhearted boy who loved life and learning. He graduated from Miss Fidge's Preschool in 2002 and attended kindergarten at Woodstock Elementary, when he felt well enough to go. He taught himself how to ride a bike. He enjoyed digging in the dirt and having lightsaber competitions with his cousins and friends. He loved animals, Harley motorcycles, and anything that was soft to the touch.

He played on soccer, basketball and baseball teams. Because of his love for baseball, he was granted a Make-A-Wish to San Francisco where he met baseball home run. leader Barry Bonds. He enjoyed spending time at Grampa's barn in Ephraim where he liked to ride "Tank the He loved to go camping with his family and fishing with his daddy. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family and friends.

He loved them dearly, especially his sisters. He was a fighter and had the spirit of a true champion. He never complained about any of his medical treatments or pain, and continually amazed everyone by his strength and determination to overcome his illness even until the end. He blessed and enriched the lives of all those who knew him. His pain and suffering have taught us how to live with faith, hope and charity.

Through all of our tears and heartaches, we have found some of our greatest joy! We would like to thank the many people who loved and helped us constantly for the last two and one-half years, especially the staff at Primary Children's Hospital and IHC Home Care. Brendan had the best and most loving care possible. Brendan is survived by his parents and his two younger sisters, Lauren and Adriana. He was born January 3, 1906 in Bountiful, Utah the son of Wilford and Sarah Howard Tuttle. He married Edna Waddoups on April 2, 1933, later solemnized in the SLC LDS Temple. She passed away May 24, 2001. He Was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Bountiful 16th ward. He was a member of the Bountiful Lions Club and Bountiful Jeep Posse.

He is survived by four sons: Wayne L. (Delia), Salt Lake City; Don A. (JoAnne). Bountiful; Merrill T. (Shirley).

Willey, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, returned to her heavenly home on Monday, October 7, 2002. Helen Ann was born June 19, (sometime in the 20th in Tooele, Utah to Kimball Young and Myra Magdalene Anderson.

She married Roy DeVerl Willey on June 4, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Helen Ann graduated from the University, of Utah (BA) and received a master's degree in English from Stanford University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Sorosis. She loved the theatre and participated in many drama productions while in college. She worked at KSL radio and taught at Stanford and the University of Utah.

She took special interest in the PTA, Reno Cancer Center, and. in several organizations dealing with the mentally retarded. She co-authored a book on education and radio, and edited numerous books written by her husband. Helen Ann loved the English language and took great delight in using unusual and descriptive words in her everyday conversations. She relished her friends, made acquaintances easily, and was genuinely interested in others.

Her countless hours of care and service deemed her everyone's "best friend." She also loved to travel, and while on her many BYU travel tours she always took copious notes, anxious to learn about and remember the places she visited all over the world. Helen Ann was proud of her pioneer heritage, being one of Brigham Young's great-granddaughters, as well as a descendant of many other early Utah settlers. She was preceded in death by her husband, (December 1972), and a daughter, Andrea Elizabeth Willey, (April 1960). She is survived by her children: Robert Young Willey (Ellen), Kimball Young Willey (Carolyn), Sara Jennis Peterson (Paul), Quentin Young Willey (Sheila), Dorothy Geneve Johnson (Justin), Blair Young Willey; 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren (and one on the way). Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12th, 2002 at 12:00 noon, in the Edgewood Chapel, 3500 North 180 East, Provo, Utah.

Born June 19, 1985 to Norma J. Tabish and Leo J. Clark in Salt Lake City, Utah. Senior at Olympus High School and was looking forward to an early graduation scholarship. He had a great passion for basketball.

He was on the varsity basketball and cross skiing team at Clarinda Academy in lowa. J.J. had a unique gift for writing and expressing himself through poetry. Preceded in death by Grandpa's James Berling and Gene Tabish. He temporarily leaves behind a caring and devoted mom; loving fother; (Michele Scott), dedicated and loyal sisters Stormee and Genab Clark (Fabian, Lopez); newborn niece Aaleana who's birth brought him great joy.

Grandma Marion Berling who gave him unconditional love; Ashley Neilson his special friend. Many family and friends who will miss greatly. A funeral service will be held Monday 10:00 a.m. at the Neil O' Donnell Sons Mortuary 372 East 100 South. Friends may call Sunday from 8:00 p.m.

You are now free from life's hard paths rest in peace Spirited Johanna "Hanni" Elisabeth (Schwarz) Wolferts Passed away the morning of Oct 10, 2002, at age 89. Born November 10, 1912, in Barmen (now Wuppertal), Germany, the second youngest of six children born to Johann Otto Paul Schwarz and Helene Elisabeth Married childhood friend Hans Herbert Wolferts on June 1, 1934. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In October 1959, she and her family immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah. A life member of the LDS Church, she served faithfully in many callings including District Relief Society president, Branch Relief Society president, Laurel advisor and Ordinance worker.

Though the war-years left their mark, she never failed to meet the challenges of life with spontaneity, humor, prayer, and faith. She cherished her association with friends and family, but never to the exclusion of the needy and neglected, including animals. Gifted with a beautiful soprano voice she often sang in church meetings, instilling in her sons an appreciation for religious and folk music. She has left a lasting legacy by writing her life's story, which stands as an enduring and loving witness to her family, and to the faith and courage with which she lived. Though talented in many ways, she will be remembered most in the hearts of those she helped in times of need and whose lives she so profoundly touched.

Surely, she is sorely missed. Those who share her convictions have the certainty that she will be reunited with them again eternally through Christ and his covenants. Johanna is survived by her husband, Hans, sons Ralph (Judy) and Edgar (Jane), brother Rudolf "Rudi" (Irmgard), sister-in-law Anne Kleinkopf of Twin Falls, Idaho, sisterin-law Gertrud Wolferts of Wuppertal, Germany, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, sister Martha Noss, brothers Hans, Wilhelm, Friederich, and niece Christel Sandburg. The family extends special thanks and appreciation to the nurses, CNA's and staff of the Woodland Park Care Center for their loving care of Johanna.

A brief service will be held Monday, Oct 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary on 2350 East 1300 South in Salt Lake City. Interment will follow immediately in the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery. There will be no viewing..
