Spotlight: Blending East and West: The integration of acupuncture and massage therapy (2025)

Patients seeking effective, drug-free pain relief have a new option at Body in Balance Physiotherapy, where Registered Massage Therapist Gonzalo Rivero has added certified acupuncture to his practice.

Patients seeking pain relief now have access to a powerful combination of therapeutic approaches at Body in Balance Physiotherapy.

Registered Massage Therapist Gonzalo Rivero recently completed his acupuncture certification, adding an exciting dimension to his already comprehensive practice.

New Skills, New Possibilities

"What sparked my interest in acupuncture was my curiosity in a deeper understanding of the human body and a deep respect for ancient wisdom," Rivero explains. "Over the years as a massage therapist, I found myself occasionally reverting back to traditional Chinese medicine texts and found acupuncture fascinating. To me, acupuncture seems like an elegant blend of art and science."

Rivero earned his reputation as a skilled massage therapist through years of dedicated practice. His hands-on work with myofascial release techniques and kinesiotaping has helped countless patients recover from injury and manage chronic pain conditions. Now, with fresh acupuncture training, he's opening new doors for patients who might benefit from integrated care.

From Stage to Sports: Elite Care for All Bodies

Working with high-profile clients has given Rivero unique insights into exceptional physical demands. "Working with theatrical performers and professional athletes is a unique experience," he notes. "They often push their bodies to extraordinary limits with very little time to recover. Acupuncture will provide me with another powerful tool to help my clients recover and find balance physically and neurologically."

Breaking Through Treatment Plateaus

Many patients experience plateaus in their recovery when using single therapeutic approaches. Rivero has found that combining techniques offers new pathways to healing.

"Yes, acupuncture has helped me resolve stubborn conditions," Rivero confirms. "Getting rid of chronic or acute inflammation can sometimes be tricky. Using a combination of specific anti-inflammatory points, acupuncture has provided me with an avenue to help my clients with their inflammatory conditions in a holistic and effective way while distancing them from continuous use of harmful medications."

The Treatment Experience

Patients often wonder what to expect when combining different therapeutic approaches. Rivero has developed a structured yet flexible format to maximize benefits.

"Following my certification in Acupuncture, I've been able to offer my clients a new approach and treatment option," he shares. "I've established an integrated massage treatment option, consisting of 30 minutes of massage and 30 minutes of Acupuncture. This approach can be used consistently or occasionally, depending on the client's injury/severity, etc."

Looking Ahead

Rivero sees his acupuncture certification as one step in an ongoing professional journey. "For the foreseeable near future, I'll be focusing on perfecting my acupuncture skills and eventually taking the advanced acupuncture course at McMaster University," he says. "I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm always looking to advance my knowledge and skills to provide the best treatment possible for my clients."
