The Story
We got our first teaser for the Liberty Falls storyline in the final cutscene of MW3 Zombies.
In the conclusion of MWZ, we see Dr Ava Jansen, the biological daughter of Samantha Maxis and Sergei Ravenov, in a hotel room at Liberty Falls in 2021.
Ravenov attempts to warn her away, but a shadowy figure inside Jansen’s mirror begins to emerge from a portal.
Jansen gets closer to the mirror, believing she hears her mother Samantha Maxis’ voice, before being grabbed and pulled into the vortex.
It stands to reason that the Liberty Falls story will, therefore, see Dr Jansen transported into the 1990s, during which time we know an incursion took place—one that Quartermaster Krystal Miller reportedly survived as a child.
Back in 1991, at the exact same time as the events of the Terminus cinematic trailer, Edward Richtofen wakes up from a nightmare to discover that the captured Forsaken from Cold War Zombies is causing chaos.
Fighting his way to the lab, Richtofen is attacked by purple energy, which he refers to as ‘Sam,’ stating that they will never be free. However, Samantha Maxis, inside her Forsaken prison, replies that she is already free.
At this moment, a dimensional breach occurs on Terminus, perhaps indicating that Maxis has been hiding her powers until she was ready to attack.
It’s worth noting that the figure inside Jansen’s mirror did not resemble Samantha Maxis, nor does the voice we hear in the cinematic sound much like the iconic character.
Therefore, it’s possible that we could be being misled by the Forsaken or another Dark Aether entity. For now, only time will tell.
Crew
Unlike in Terminus, Liberty Falls does not have a specific Crew for us to play as.
In Liberty Falls, our Crew is a group of outsiders who are mistaken for Project Janus operatives upon entering the incursion site.
Players are therefore free to pick their favorite Operators when heading into the West Virginian small town map.
Completing the Liberty Falls Main Quest Guide
To get started with the Liberty Falls Main Quest, you must first investigate the Church to discover the Pack-a-Punch location:
Step 1: Investigate the Church
- When spawning into Liberty Falls, players must follow one of two orange objective markers appear on their HUD.
- Both of these markers lead to the quickest way to the Church, and both cost the same amount of Essence in the end.
- Left takes you through the Liberty Lanes bowling alley, right takes you a slightly more scenic outdoor route. Pick your favorite but stick to it so you don’t waste Essence on opening unnecessary doors!
- Along the marked route, you’ll need to open three doors that total 5250 Essence (1500, 1750, 2000 respectively). This means you’ll need to survive for a few rounds to rack up points, so we advise spending some Essence on a Wall Buy or a Perk Can if needed.
- After you arrive at the Church, you can open the Dimensional Membrane on the door for 2250 Essence.
- You will then step into the Dark Aether and discover the Pack-a-Punch waiting within!

Rewards
Treyarch has revealed that players who complete the Main Quest for a map at any point will earn “unique rewards themed after their respective map.”
Right now, we don’t know exactly what rewards will be given out for Liberty Falls, but the Terminus Main Quest unlocks an exclusive ‘Trophy Collector’ skin for Maya.
On top of that, those who complete a Main Quest before the Guided mode launches will also unlock a limited-time Calling Card to show off their skills.
However, this bonus reward is only attainable prior to Liberty Falls’ Guided mode becoming available.
After that point, only the regular reward will be available, even if you complete the standard unguided mode.
